How to Remove Diesel Smell from Clothes

How To Get Gas Smell Out of Clothes

Gas Has Spilled on Your Clothes

Maintaining gas based motorized vehicles can be challenging. There are a lot of moving parts and mechanics to take into account when you are either tuning up a lawn mower, working with gas-powered yard tools like a blower, or chainsaw. Or maybe you came into contact with gasoline through attempting to fill up your car at the pumps and accidentally over-filled your tank while you were playing that app on your phone. Yikes and double yikes! As you have found out, just washing gasoline-soaked clothing — especially heavy jeans or work shirts — does not get the clothing completely odor- or stain-free.

Various Methods for Cleaning Gas Out of Clothes

Since gasoline is a petroleum product, it can leave an oily residue and still smell, even if washed several times. There are several home remedies that are out there that you can try.

Baking Soda and Coffee Grinds: This home remedy calls for baking soda and coffee grinds to be sprinkled over the stained area where gasoline is present. Let the coffee grinds or baking soda sit on top of the gasoline stain for several hours. Once the mixture has soaked up the gas and the sticky residue, wash it in the washing machine.

Dishwashing Soap: Dishwashing soap is formulated to cut grease like petroleum. By using a mixture of warm water and dish soap, along with a scrub brush, work the stain out using a circular motion with the scrub brush. Rinse the dish soap out of your clothing using warm water. Once all the dish soap has been rinsed off, run your clothes through the washing machine.

Vinegar and Baking Soda: No, we’re not telling you to turn your gasoline-soaked clothing into your fourth-grade science project volcano. Add two cups of vinegar and two tablespoons of baking soda to your washing machine along with detergent. Run your clothes through a regular cycle.

Cola: Make sure you are hydrating regularly. We don’t recommend hydrating with soda, however. Using a two-liter bottle of soda, pour it over your clothes. Depending on size, you can do this in a plugged kitchen sink. Make sure you agitate the clothing to activate the carbonation in the cola product. Let sit for 24 hours, then run through your washing machine.

To be 100 percent safe; the clothes should be hung outside to “air out” for at least 24 hours, until the smell is completely gone, BEFORE washing the clothing. If they are really saturated, you should first hose them off outside. Since there is a slight risk of combustion (fire) because of the potential fumes coming from the washing machine, DO NOT put them in the washer until you can no longer smell the gasoline.

Health Concerns Related to Gasoline Odor Exposure

Home remedies can be a good starting point for trying to successfully remove the gasoline odor from your clothing.  However, it is so important to make sure you are completely removing the gasoline smell. There is no smell from the product. No sticky residue. Just fresh smelling clothes!”
